Q4- Critically comment on Claude McKay If We Must Die. P 121 (25 Pts)
If we must die is an angry sonnet it is a carefully controlled poem in both structure and tone
Structurally this sonnet is made up of four parts : three quatrain and a couplet throughout the poem the speaker is concerned with reaction to the almost certain condition of death . in the first quatrain he totally rejects dying like a hog if death is inevitable the second quatrain that we should die noby .this would exact the respect of our enemies
The third quatrain he exhorts his people to opt for his earlier proposition to deal the enemy even one blow in response to his thousand blows since the speakers people are outnumbered
The tone is controlled it being as logical and quiet in the first two quatrain , becoming emotional and angry in the quatrain and couplet
